Winter dusk

My favourite subject to photograph, the one that inspires me most, are trees.

I find them most photogenic in winter when their bare branches twist and writhe against the sky in a multitude of permutations, each tree different, each with it's own character.

At the moment I am concentrating on one patch, Ashtead National Nature Reserve and Epsom Common in Surrey, which lie side by side. The site is famous for its ancient coppiced Oaks.

The two images here were taken a couple of weeks ago at dusk after cloud had scuppered any chance of dramatic sunset light. The first shot (top) a silhouette shot, is only made by the reflection of water at its base. I took this using an ISO of 1600 looking for the digital grain to enhance mood.

The second shot (bottom) was taken about ten minutes later as red from the dusk was still reflecting down from the sky and lighting the woodland with a faint glow. An 18 second exposure at f16 ISO 100 was used to capture the light.

I will be putting a portfolio on shortly of this work so please visit again soon.
